Discover how it can feel when your child gets overwhelmed. Notice triggers so you may prevent overload in the future. Help your child to understand that it’s normal and ok to feel this way.

What this book is for:

Emotions are a complicated thing. Especially if you’re young. Telling someone how you feel is hard when you have limited words. Or if there is so much noise in your head that you can’t concentrate. But what if everything gets too much?

Sometimes this can look like “misbehavior”, sometimes people call it being “difficult” or “too sensitive.”

When in fact this is how some brains work. Or show that they are overworked. Not everyone sees the world the same way and experiences stimuli the same as others. What is fine for one can be overwhelming for his friend.

This book is here to give parents, teachers, and friends an insight into how it can feel to struggle with sensory overload and give the child who feels this way a voice and a tool to communicate his emotions in the simplest way.

In the back, you find some tips and tricks that hopefully help when the world gets too loud.

This is an absolutely incredible book—a seminal work of children’s literature.

I was moved to tears—not just because it’s a beautiful story and well-written, but also because it helped me as a parent of someone who often finds the world too loud. I was struck by how well this book can be used to help children communicate and find their way back to calm, especially when they don’t have the language to express their feelings with words.

The author’s rhyming is lovely and makes it easy for kids to follow along and understand what’s happening, and the message is so important too: It teaches children that their feelings are okay and valid even if they’re different from their peers. Not everyone sees the world in the same way—and that’s okay, too!

This book should be in every school worldwide and on every bookshelf! It’s truly an invaluable resource for children.

Meet the author and illustrator

Anne lives among giant rolls of cheese, romantic canals and masses of bikes in Utrecht, Netherlands. In her childhood she spent countless hours running through the Black forest in Germany, imagining all sorts of fantastical creatures and enchanted portals to other worlds. After dabbling in theatre, visual arts and designing clothes her creative heart found the most fulfilment in telling stories for adults and children alike.

Crafting stories to show the beauty of diversity and to help children cope with difficult situations is one way for her to try and erase the stigma around people who are “different”.
